The holidays are behind us and the new year is before us.  Life begins to resume a sense of post-holiday normalcy and, at the same time, 2017 brings significant uncertainty for many.  As we resolve to live a healthier lifestyle and "be a better person" in 2017, consider the ways in which making a personal commitment to social justice can be part of your life and lifestyle resolutions.

The EIL office was instrumental in successfully coordinating a workshop on migration using a videoconferencing platform.  The presenter, Rafael Moreno, SJ, of Mexico is a pre-eminent researcher and activist with many years of experience in the area of immigration.  He is currently affiliated with Servicio Jesuita a Migrantes, Mexico.  The three-hour workshop brought together more than 30 people from 7 countries.

Reyna González, RSCJ has been appointed Director of the Office of Educational Initiatives and Leadership.  She has held the role of Assistant Director for the last three years.  Reyna is a specialist in non-profit organizational management and popular education methodology.  She has more than 20 years of experience as an educator, administrator and consultant.  Her areas of expertise include, among other areas, strategic planning, leadership training, program developmenta and evaluation.

The Summit Leadership Academy is a week-long rigorous training program with a focus on motivating youth to be proactive social change agents.  Through hands-on seminars participants explore such topics as personal leadership style; role of contextual reality; spiritual and ethical dimensions; concepts of power/empowerment; and the interplay of gender, race and social class.  They also learn professional level skills of project development, implementation and evaluation.

Congratulations class of 2016! The Stuart Center was honored to host the graduation ceremony of the Catholic Charities Green Construction Training Program on May 28. The ceremony featured Bishop Mario Dorsonville and Monsignor John Enzler as speakers and was followed by a garden reception where graduates and their families celebrated and enjoyed delicious hors d'oeuvres inspired by regional Latin American cuisine. Many thanks to everyone who helped to make the event a joyful success!
