The Society of the Sacred Heart in the United States and Canada began – as did so many American institutions – with an immigrant. St. Rose Philippine Duchesne left her home in France in 1818 with a desire to educate the poor, especially the indigenous people of America. The schools she founded served a diverse population which included immigrants, as well as Native American and African American children.

In 2008, the international Society of the Sacred Heart reaffirmed its commitment to the economically poor and disenfranchised:

As Religious of the Sacred Heart in the United States-Canada Province, we are called by our recent Chapter Documents to stand in solidarity with “those who have been wounded, displaced, and excluded because of poverty, violence, and environmental degradation.” The recent decision to withdraw the United States from the Paris Accord and to stop future payments to the Green Climate Fund compels us to add our voice to the growing chorus of people of good will from around the world who are deeply concerned about the negative impact this will have both locally and globally.

The Stuart Center’s Conference Center, working in collaboration with the Justice, Peace, and Integrity of Creation office, and Franciscan Action Network welcomed those planning to participate in the April 29th People’s Climate Change March. The Stuart Center not only provided hospitality to protest participants, but also hosted a pot-luck dinner prior to screening the film After the Flood which was shown in Chapel Hall. At evening’s end attendees gathered around a fire pit in the garden for an prayer service.

We are embarking on a new project for the formation and professional development of educators in collaboration with the National Conference of Catholic Bishops of Cuba.  Reyna Gonzalez and Imma De Stefanis recently spent a week in Bayamo, Cuba as part of a new alliance between the Stuart Center and the Bishops’ Conference.  In this new venture we have been able to recognize and bear witness to the new life that is emerging in Cuba.

The Conference Center is proud to be have partnered with the Stuart Center's Executive Director and the Justice, Peace, & the Integrity of Creation Office to welcome Women’s March on Washington participants. Answering the call for housing, the Stuart Center provided housing to 14 women - traveling from Washington State, Florida, Maine, and several locations in between.

The holidays are behind us and the new year is before us.  Life begins to resume a sense of post-holiday normalcy and, at the same time, 2017 brings significant uncertainty for many.  As we resolve to live a healthier lifestyle and "be a better person" in 2017, consider the ways in which making a personal commitment to social justice can be part of your life and lifestyle resolutions.

The EIL office was instrumental in successfully coordinating a workshop on migration using a videoconferencing platform.  The presenter, Rafael Moreno, SJ, of Mexico is a pre-eminent researcher and activist with many years of experience in the area of immigration.  He is currently affiliated with Servicio Jesuita a Migrantes, Mexico.  The three-hour workshop brought together more than 30 people from 7 countries.

Reyna González, RSCJ has been appointed Director of the Office of Educational Initiatives and Leadership.  She has held the role of Assistant Director for the last three years.  Reyna is a specialist in non-profit organizational management and popular education methodology.  She has more than 20 years of experience as an educator, administrator and consultant.  Her areas of expertise include, among other areas, strategic planning, leadership training, program developmenta and evaluation.

The Summit Leadership Academy is a week-long rigorous training program with a focus on motivating youth to be proactive social change agents.  Through hands-on seminars participants explore such topics as personal leadership style; role of contextual reality; spiritual and ethical dimensions; concepts of power/empowerment; and the interplay of gender, race and social class.  They also learn professional level skills of project development, implementation and evaluation.
