The World Food Program estimates that an additional 130 million people in poor and middle-income countries will face life-threatening food insecurity in 2020 as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Society of the Sacred Heart United States - Canada Province has signed a Statement by Catholic Leaders demanding that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) immediately release all children and their associated family members detained at three detention centers named in a recent federal court ruling. In the face of a global pandemic, any delay can be deadly. We also call for an end to the fundamental injustice of deporting and detaining children and families seeking to exercise their right to seek asylum and protection in the United States.
Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients are thriving in the United States. They contribute to our society by working to support their families, by taking advantage of educational opportunities and by serving in the military. Approximately 62,000 health care workers in the United States, on the front lines of a global pandemic, are DACA-eligible.
As we approach the celebration of the Feast of the Sacred Heart, our hearts are full. For weeks we have grappled with the uncertainty and physical isolation caused by the pandemic. In the wake of George Floyd's violent death and the cry for justice more publicly in our sights, we now hear more acutely the call to confront the virus of racism and injustice that continues to plague our world.
Created by the Conference of Sacred Heart in celebration of the Feast of the Sacred Heart (June 19) which coincides with honoring Juneteenth, the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States, this video invites us to deep consideration of who we are called to be.
The Society of the Sacred Heart, United States – Canada Province Leadership Team stands in support of the following powerful “Red Record Statement” issued by the National Black Sisters’ Conference on “21st Century Lynchings in America.”
The Society of the Sacred Heart in the United States and Canada strongly condemns the gross violation of human dignity that we, along with millions of others, witnessed in the video of George Floyd’s last minutes. We are outraged at yet another killing of an unarmed African-American man, and stand in solidarity with all people of color who are at risk of violence in our country. We also call for a quick and fair legal process to ensure accountability and justice.
“I renew my urgent call to respond to the ecological crisis, the cry of the Earth and the cry of the poor cannot continue. Let's take care of creation, a gift of our good Creator God.” ~Pope Francis
